Download all necessary filesįirst things first download NerdTool and GeekTool, I prefer working with GeekTool however from my understanding NerdTool is the only program that allows quartz files to be played on the desktop. I used this tool to generate my background image.Fully iTunes Geeklet for the information text, I only used the Music Data geeklet however you can also use the stars geeklet if you so desire.Quartz Composer, I will explain how to get your hands on Quartz Composer as it can be a bit confusing.Most likely there are workarounds for this, I may get around to finding some but as of yet you’ll need to change volume in your applications. I will note however that we will be using a tool called Soundflower to access the stream of audio data for the quartz composition, because of this the volume button on your mac will not work. Within 10 minutes of our beginning to learn GeekTool our desktop was showing a moving clock, disk and battery capacity meters, and a running log of iTunes music being played. It's simple to create geeklets that allow your desktop to come to life, animating and updating in real time. Fortunately, there is a growing library of geeklets already on the Internet for download that allow those without command shell knowledge to use GeekTool. To really get the most out of GeekTool you need to be familiar with some basic UNIX/Linux commands. ![]()
